George Harrison said The Beatles were naive in the US | Music News

Iconic rock band The Beatles first set foot in the United States in 1964, however George Harrison as soon as admitted they were considerably naïve at the time.

After securing their first No. 1 hit in the US, I Want To Hold Your Hand, the band deliberate a temporary go to that included a record-setting look on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Their arrival on February 7 marked the begin of the British Invasion, and the quantity of followers who turned out to greet them was staggering.

“And we actually needed a helluva lot of confidence for the States as a result of it was such an important place. I imply, no person’d ever made it, you understand, British acts– other than the odd singer like Lonnie Donnegan.

“But Ed Sullivan was, you know– Everybody had told us how he was really big. But again, we were pretty naive to certain things so that helped at the time. I remember them asking us did we know who Walter Cronkite was.

“And I said, ‘I dunno, is not he anyone on the tv?’ You know, issues like that were good as a result of all of them had fun– the people asking questions and the press us being naive and never seeming to care about that kind of factor.”

When asked by Crawdaddy if there was ever “a tendency to nonetheless act naive after you wised up?” Harrison responded, “I dunno. But by that time we might bought into that entire kind of routine that we used to have, you understand, at press conferences.

“A lot of it was just nervous energy, just for jokes and stuff which everybody seemed to like.

“That was one of the large helps for the Beatles at the time– If anyone dried up in the press conferences there was at all times anyone else there with a sensible reply. There was at all times a good stability, so no person may ever actually fairly nail us.”

Harrison described The Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show as simply “the climax” to their “entire America factor.”

Looking back, he suggested, it “most likely would not have mattered what we might achieved on the Sullivan show, it was like already established by the earlier press that had gone earlier than. But that was a long time in the past.”

The press, much like the throngs of fans, wanted something from the group. As Harrison pointed out, they sought a witty remark or some other tidbit they could use to sell hundreds of newspapers.

Harrison revealed in “George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters” that The Beatles found most interviews dull, often resorting to inside jokes about the reporters to endure them.

“Were you bored by all that?” a TV host questioned him in 1988 regarding the band’s relentless interview schedule. Harrison replied: “Well, typically it was boring, typically we might simply make enjoyable of them.

“We’d have our own little in jokes, you know, to get through. It’s like a survival kind of thing.”
