In its statement, Centcom said US forces “performed self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to defend our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces”.

This came just days after Trump suggested a deal was close, while the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said a deal from the talks is still possible, but it will “take a few days”.
