Rory McIlroy has criticized Bryson DeChambeau for holding The Open Championship “hostage” following his response to receiving a two-shot penalty.

DeChambeau was summoned by guidelines officers following his second spherical at Royal Birkdale on Friday, where he was judged to have improved the circumstances surrounding his ball before his second shot on the par-four fifth. While there was no indication DeChambeau had deliberately improved the circumstances when he trod on the long grass around his ball, intent is irrelevant to referees in such circumstances.

DeChambeau, who earlier snapped back at feedback made by a golf legend, was incensed by the two-shot penalty determination. He had heated exchanges with officers at the situation of the incident, and subsequently headed to the vary as darkness fell, adopted by a crowd of reporters in an uncommon spectacle.

The state of affairs and DeChambeau’s objections triggered delays to the release of third-round tee instances, prompting world No. 2 McIlroy to criticize the LIV Golf star’s conduct.

He said he’s “not fond” of the two-time major winner and instructed he was looking for “attention” through his actions.

McIlroy believes DeChambeau deserved the penalty. He said: “I used to be watching it live. I used to be up in the gamers’ lounge watching it with a few other gamers, and as soon as he made the step into the ball, we all type of seemed at each other, and we have been like, ‘That did not appear proper.'”.

“Then when I heard that he was called in by the principles officers, I believe it was fairly apparent for why. Yeah, I believe there’s no doubt that he improved the road of his backswing.

“Again, it’s like, whether it was careless or whether it was intentional, I don’t think it matters. Hopefully, it was careless, but I think the two-shot penalty was justified for sure.”

DeChambeau held second place prior to the penalty being assessed, trailing 36-hole chief Lucas Herbert by one stroke, but fell to a tie for fifth once the sanction was utilized.

He appeared to counsel withdrawing from the competitors, and his consultant, Brett Falkoff, remained uncommitted concerning whether or not his shopper would compete on Saturday.

Later that night, DeChambeau announced via social media that he would continue enjoying, posting: “Obviously disappointed with the ruling. I don’t agree with it, but it is what it is. This fires me up. Onto the weekend. Let’s get it.”
