Griffins caddie felt bad for Rose and Fleetwood | Golf News
Ben Griffin’s caddie admits he “felt bad” for Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood during their Ryder Cup conflict due to the hostile reception from American spectators.
Rose and Fleetwood weren’t the only targets, as Rory McIlroy also endured a difficult weekend battling aggressive Ryder Cup crowds. Justin Thomas was compelled to intervene at one stage as the Northern Irishman confronted a barrage of verbal assaults.
Speaking on the Quiet Please! podcast, Griffin’s caddie Alex Ritthamel revealed he approached Rose and Fleetwood following their spherical to apologize for the fan conduct.
“There was a lot of energy. I unfortunately heard some things that I probably could never repeat. You only get to hear really what you’re around for. I felt bad for Justin and Tommy. I even expressed that to them after we finished,” Ritthamel explained.
“Ben made his putt on seven, I think it was probably 60 feet, and then Rosey made a 40 footer on top. That popped a seal on things and really got things going. But they were both great and it was a lot of fun.”
Griffin featured in only one match prior to Sunday singles when he and Bryson DeChambeau fell to Rose and Fleetwood.
Nevertheless, Ritthamel was amazed by Rose’s efficiency against DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler.
“The match that we played with Rosey, the old guy, I want to say he carried that team. He was making putts,” Ritthamel famous. “I got out there towards the back nine, and Bryson and Scottie as a team were 10 under through 14.
“And Tommy and Rosey had been 13 under through 14, and I feel they said Justin was 9 under on his own ball. Every time you noticed Rosey need to make one thing or hit a shot, he seemingly did it.

“I felt like I put the ball in play nicely off the tee, but Tommy made some huge putts in the right moments and that was a huge turnaround match,” said Rose.
