Brenda Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter Erica had been murdered in their home in American Fork, Utah, in the summer season of 1984. The surprising crime had deep hyperlinks with Mormonism and was documented in a non-fiction e book by Jon Krakauer entitled Under the Banner of Heaven.

The critically acclaimed work was turned into a ‘gripping’ true crime miniseries initially launched in 2022, which is now accessible to stream in the UK for anybody who has access to Hulu on Disney+. Struggling with his own religion, Pyre finds himself navigating the testimonies of the Lafferty brothers and the stress from his spiritual leaders as the story takes him and the viewers back in time to the creation of the Latter Day Saints.

With detective Taba creating the right steadiness for a man exterior the Mormon group, the viewers is allowed to share in his shock and anger as an outsider to the deep traditions that lock some of the characters into their roles in this tragedy.

The sequence has been extremely praised and at present has an 86% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Andrew Garfield was nominated for a quantity of awards for his position, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

“It also gives you a very intriguing look behind the history of Mormonism, which ties into the central plot in an unexpected way. Absolutely, 100% can’t miss.”

However, both the e book and the sequence have been criticised for their portrayal of the Church of Latter Day Saints, though many practising members had been consulted during the filming course of.

And some viewers said they discovered the pacing slow, and some didn’t just like the flashbacks to the start of the church’s creation. One said: “Maybe if this was a movie it would have been better but as it stands, it’s a long drawn out story without all that much going on in the way of mystery or intrigue. Most of the drama felt contrived and the dialogue was unbearably stilted.”

But many more loved the environment the sequence created and the moments of stillness and reflections on religion and fact.

“The lead performers work so nicely together, the strain and suspense are totally plausible. Engrossing, if a tad exhausting going at instances, it is a good restricted sequence.”
