Hegseth cutting Senator Mark Kellys pension over | Political News

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has reportedly censured Senator Mark Kelly after he and a number of other Democrats posted a video stating that members of the U.S. armed forces are allowed to disobey unconstitutional orders.

According to Fox News, Hegseth has directed the Secretary of the Navy, John Phelan, to review Kelly’s retirement rank and pay, and present a suggestion within 45 days. The review comes as the Department of War seeks to escalate the investigation into Kelly, claiming that he made “seditious statements” that undermined navy operations.

“Six weeks ago, Senator Mark Kelly — and five other members of Congress — released a reckless and seditious video that was clearly intended to undermine good order and military discipline,” Hegseth said in a post on X. “As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice. And the Department of War — and the American people — expect justice.”

“Therefore, in response to Senator Mark Kelly’s seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct — the Department of War is taking administrative action against Captain Mark E. Kelly, USN (Ret),” he added. “The department has initiated retirement grade determination proceedings under 10 U.S.C. § 1370(f), with reduction in his retired grade resulting in a corresponding reduction in retired pay.”

“To ensure this action, the Secretary of War has also issued a formal Letter of Censure, which outlines the totality of Captain (for now) Kelly’s reckless misconduct,” the assertion went on. “This Censure is a necessary process step, and will be placed in Captain Kelly’s official and permanent military personnel file.”

According to Hegseth, Kelly has been “provided notice of the basis for this action and has thirty days to submit a response.” The Trump official added that “Captain Kelly’s status as a sitting United States Senator does not exempt him from accountability, and further violations could result in further action.”

When requested if they want to add any extra remark, the Department of War told the Daily Express, “We have nothing to provide beyond the following.” According to the Associated Press, the censure comes more than a month after Kelly participated in a video with 5 other Democratic lawmakers in which they called on troops to defy “illegal orders.”

Shortly after the video was posted, President Trump reacted to the post and accused the lawmakers of sedition, “punishable by DEATH” in a Truth Social post. The 90-second video was first posted from Sen. Elissa Slotkin’s X account.

In it, the six lawmakers — Slotkin, Kelly and Reps. Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander and Chrissy Houlahan — communicate instantly to U.S. service members, whom Slotkin acknowledges are “under enormous stress and pressure right now.” Kelly, along with some of the other Democrats in the initial video, has despatched out fundraising messages based on the Republican president’s response to their feedback
