White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller despatched a clear message to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Tuesday amid continued chaos over the death of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis: “You have federal immunity in the conduct of your duties.”
Miller’s assertion comes amid a debate over whether or not federal brokers needs to be held accountable for what some deem to be an extreme use of drive following Good being shot by Jonathan Ross, an ICE agent deployed in Minnesota.
“To all ICE officers: You have federal immunity. Anybody who lays a hand on you or tries to stop you or tries to obstruct you is committing a felony,” Miller said during a Fox News interview. “You have immunity to perform your duties, and no one—no city official, no state official, no illegal alien, no leftist agitator or domestic insurrectionist— can prevent you from fulfilling your legal obligations and duties.”
Miller added that if somebody interferes with an immigration operation, they are going to face legal repercussions.
“The Department of Justice has made clear that if officials cross that line into obstruction, into criminal conspiracy against the United States or against ICE officers, then they will face justice,” he added.

Miller’s remark got here virtually a week after Good’s death, which has impressed a whole bunch of protests across the nation. The 37-year-old mom was in her SUV, which was stopped sideways on the road, when ICE brokers approached her, ordering her to exit her vehicle. As she started driving into the direction of visitors, turning away from Ross, he approached her and fired three deadly pictures.
In the times after the initial capturing, Vice President JD Vance also advised Ross would have “absolute immunity” from prison prices.
“He is protected by absolute immunity,” Vance said last week. “He was doing his job. The idea that Tim Walz and a bunch of radicals are going to go after and make this guy’s life miserable because he was doing the job that he was asked to do is preposterous.”
Miller and Vance’s remarks seem to confirm a recent report from The New York Times that revealed it is increasingly unlikely that Ross would face legal repercussions for the shooting, though that could change as evidence on the case is still being collected.

The FBI and the Justice Department are expected to scrutinize Good’s actions and activities leading up to the incident, including potential connections to local activists and vocal critics of the Trump administration.
In essence, Good could be investigated as an “instigator” of the capturing, a phrase President Donald Trump has now used multiple times to describe the victim and her wife, Rebecca, who were acting as legal observers and filming an anti-ICE protest during the incident.
Under President Trump, Justice Department officials have argued that investigating and punishing protesters with organized efforts to prevent or disrupt immigration enforcement is a legally necessary action. However, critics of the administration argue that normalizing the prosecution of protesters could have serious implications for First Amendment rights.
Details of the ICE Minneapolis shooting remain disputed
President Trump described Good over the weekend as having been “highly disrespectful of law enforcement.”
According to Trump, Good and “her friend… were harassing, they were following for days and for hours, and I think, frankly, they’re professional agitators.”
Similarly, other members of the administration, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have described the victim as a “domestic terrorist.”
