An Israeli protection official confirmed that the Israeli Air Force struck the building housing Iran’s Council of Experts in the holy metropolis of Qom on Tuesday, The Times of Israel reported.
“We wanted to prevent them from picking a new supreme leader,” the official said.
The Council of Experts is the physique within the Iranian regime with the authority to appoint a new supreme chief. The clerics on the council vote on a shortlist of candidates drawn up by a smaller, secret committee.
The Assembly of Experts has 88 members. It stays unclear how many of them have been at the building during the strike, according to the Israeli official.
