“And I had this guy in my ear calling me a traitor, terrorist, this and that. And first thing I want to say is I’m like, dude, a traitor to who? I’m not from this country, clearly….” He continued, “And there was a woman next to the guy that was grilling me that just goes, well, for that amount of money, I will do it too… And then they started arguing. They started having a conversation. They started arguing with themselves. I’m like, okay, and I actually found it quite funny..”

The criticism did not stop there, as the grand slam champion discovered himself on the receiving end of vital backlash from spectators. Europe finally secured their first away victory since 2012, though not before McIlroy famously told hecklers to “shut the f— up” during the second day’s play.

Look, I do not care if people are saying whatever they’re saying to me, even the first tee announcers shouting: ‘f— you, Rory,’ which is nothing in contrast to the other stuff we heard.”
