Jon Rahm fumes at Spanish Open official after | Golf News
Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry are both struggling in their first start since coming off an unbelievable Ryder Cup victory on away soil in New York in September.
Rahm, who was one of the celebs at Bethpage Black, is aiming for his fourth Spanish Open win this week. The LIV Golf man, who faces uncertainty over whether or not he’ll have the ability to play the Ryder Cup in 2027, began off at two-under but then was unable to keep that momentum going on the back 9, as he completed the first spherical one-over 72 at Club de Campo in Spain.
Rahm spoke to reporters after the spherical, and was visibly annoyed, saying: “A frustrating day. You couldn’t ask a harder question right now. I’m so angry and I want to be so sarcastic.
“I didn’t think my swing was that…I struggled with the wind to be honest. There was a lot of swings that came out the way I wanted it to and the wind did affect it the way I expected it to.
“I mean I could go through a lot of holes, but like 17 is a great example, I was posing right over the pin, it flew 12 over because the wind was way more down than I though. Same with one but the opposite,” said Rahm
Rahm mirrored deeply on his first spherical of golf since beating the Americans 15-13 in the first highway victory since 2012.
“On two it should be right to left and it got pushed to the right and on three I flagged it another 12, 15 long over it, it was just not what I expected. Then a couple of short misses, I didn’t feel like they were bad putts, just misreads or got unlucky with the rolls, that happens, that’s just golf.
“I didn’t feel like I played that bad and the score is not nearly where I would like to be.”
He also had an altercation with the marshal on a par-four eighth hole after his drive landed in the rough. Rahm completed the hole on par, but then happened to bogey the following.
DON’T MISS:
Rahm immediately started complaining about the shot. “What a day, what a day,” said Rahm.
“It’s OK,” said the marshal that marked his ball. And then Rahm immediately replied “don’t tell me it’s OK, please. Thank you.”
Lowry shot a 4-over 75 in his opening spherical. The duo had six bogeys and two birdies.
The current leaders are Ugo Coussaud and Sam Bairstow at 6-under 65 after the first spherical and the winner of the match qualifies for the Masters and the Open Championship, as Rahm is trying to win a report fourth Spanish Open title.
