Jon Rahm sent clear message over Ryder Cup 2027 | Golf News
Jon Rahm’s resistance to the DP World Tour fines might soon lead to vital repercussions, including disqualification from the 2027 Ryder Cup in Adare Manor.
“I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now, but it just seems like in a way they’re using our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer,” Rahm acknowledged.
“[It’s] just in a way they’re extorting players like [me] and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game. So, I don’t like the situation and I’m not going to agree to that.”
Rahm’s eligibility for the Ryder Cup would increase if he signed the DP World Tour settlement that allowed him to compete on the European Tour without dealing with fines. However, the two-time major champion prefers to continue interesting the fines he has gathered in the past.
“My job is very straightforward,” Guy Kinnings, the CEO of the European circuit told reporters. “We are just administering the rules that we have in place, and we announced the approach we were taking on conditional releases, which is a precedent we’ve set, and a number of the guys signed up and Jon didn’t. That was his decision.
“As you may think about, all we’re trying to do is do what’s best for the Tour as a complete, for the membership as a complete, and the preparations we have now struck will help the Tour. It will help improve the product and that will lead to happier promotors, sponsors, broadcasters. It’s our job to deal with those guidelines that are in place and have been examined and confirmed to be honest, and that’s what we’re doing.”
However, Rahm stated he would sign the contract if they reduced his required events before Luke Donald was announced captain for the 2027 biennial event, as Rahm was on the victorious 2025 team.
“They have not agreed to that,” Rahm said. “I just refuse to play six occasions. I do not need to, and that’s not what the foundations say.”
Kinnings clarified the rules are set for Rahm, who is refusing to pay the fines.
“I feel it is fairly easy,” he responded. “He either withdraws an appeal and settles fines or he goes through the appeal course of – and that course of is underway – and then we’ll clearly then have to go with whatever the choice is made in that appeal listening to.”
