KevOnStage’s ‘Grief Sucks’ Is A Dissertation On…

A dissertation will not be merely a actually long paper.

At its best, it’s evidence that somebody has stayed with a query long enough, studied it deeply enough, and wrestled with it truthfully enough to offer the remaining of us a new approach of understanding it.

That is why doctoral examine will be so tough. You have to determine what deserves years of your consideration and keep returning to it—digging, questioning, and studying long after the novelty is gone.

Sometimes life is the scholarship.

Humor is the scholarship.

Being an intercessor between people and experiences they don’t yet have language for is the scholarship.

And sometimes God creates areas in our lives that we never would have chosen, then asks whether or not we’re keen to examine what occurred there deeply enough to uncover one thing about our goal.

That is what I consider I witnessed with Grief Sucks.

KevOnStage’s research subject is himself.

His case examine is the death of his older brother, Jason Fredericks.

His methodology is comedy.

And Grief Sucks seems like his dissertation for what I consider may develop into lifelong work around exhibiting people—notably Black males—how to thrive, construct, create, love, and continue dwelling through grief.

When I spoke with Kev after seeing the show, I told him that if he never did anything, he ought to really feel good about what he created right here.

I meant it.

Because beneath the comedy is a thesis Black communities desperately need:

A Black man can expertise devastating pain without making the people who love him collateral injury.

Walking out of the show with my buddy Monroe, I discovered myself saying, “We don’t get to see Black men grieve in a way that doesn’t hurt the people around them.”

We know the other story.

I cheated because I used to be grieving.

I disappeared because I used to be grieving.

I grew to become offended because I used to be grieving.

I harm people because I used to be hurting.

Then everybody surrounding the grieving man is requested to soak up the implications because he’s going through one thing.

Grief Sucks affords another risk.

Kev hurts.

Deeply.

And no person has to bleed for us to consider him.
