The American journalist who was kidnapped in Baghdad last week is set to be released by an Iran-backed Iraqi militia.

The Iraqi group, Kataib Hezbollah, made the online announcement on Tuesday, just days after American journalist Shelly Kittleson was kidnapped in the capital of Iraq.

“In appreciation of the patriotic stances of the outgoing Prime Minister and his government, we have decided to release the American mission (Shelly Kittleson), on the condition that she leaves the country immediately,” the group said in a assertion, referring to the nation’s outgoing chief, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Kataib Hezbollah had not beforehand acknowledged having any connection to the high-profile abduction. However, numerous experiences had already pointed the finger at the group.

Kittleson, who freelances for numerous U.S. shops, has not been seen or heard from since her disappearance on March 31. Though her situations stay unknown, officers consider she is still alive.

In a assertion saying the kidnapping, the Iraqi inside ministry said: “Security forces immediately launched an operation to apprehend the perpetrators, acting on precise intelligence and through intensive field operations, tracking the kidnappers’ movements.”

“The pursuit resulted in the interception of a vehicle belonging to the kidnappers, which overturned as they attempted to escape. Security forces were able to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the crime,” the assertion continues. “The Ministry affirms that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted woman, and to take due legal action against all those involved in this criminal act, in accordance with the law.”

U.S. officers didn’t immediately remark on the journalist’s release. The State Department had beforehand said it was working with the FBI to secure the lady’s release.

Journalist advocacy teams had also urged the U.S. authorities to formally designate Kittleson a hostage or “wrongful detainee,” a designation that triggers an elevated stage of response.
