Letters: Dodgers must figure out their injured | College News

The Dodgers now have 15 pitchers on the injured list. This team, with all of its talent, is going nowhere without frontline pitching. Andrew Friedman realized this when he emptied Fort Knox during the offseason. But, like previous seasons, they are dropping like flies, with shoulder and forearm issues.

Other MLB teams don’t seem to have these issues, at least not to this degree.

At what point do we start to look at the coaching workers, beginning with pitching coach Mark Prior? What is it that he’s asking (and educating) these guys to do with their arms, to get that further ‘something’ out of them? Too typically that further one thing turns into nothing at all.

The underperforming, injury-plagued — and very well-paid — Dodger pitching workers illustrates the true financial benefit of big-market groups prepared and ready to spend. Yes, the Dodgers can afford to signal and pay frontline gamers, but, just as important, they will also afford to set apart or merely eat the contracts of those costly gamers if they turn into harm or ineffective, and exchange them with further extremely (over)paid gamers. It’s nearly a lock that, if their workers isn’t more healthy and more dependable come August, the Dodgers will in all probability commerce for pitching help and take on even more wage. Small-market groups such as the Reds, Guardians and Pirates can’t signal many top-tier gamers in the first place, not to mention exchange them if they don’t pan out.

Instead of spending a whole bunch of hundreds of thousands on pitchers to sit on the harm record for the bulk of every yr, I like to recommend the Dodgers as an alternative allocate those funds to put 9 All-Star offensive gamers in the lineup. Then just do what the workforce all the time winds up doing anyway — rely on cheap, lower-tier and journeyman pitchers for the season.
