U.S. lawmakers are calling on the Trump administration to take away U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff from Ukraine negotiations after conversations where he appeared to advise Russian officers on how to appeal to the president have been leaked.
In a leaked recorded dialog between Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s overseas coverage adviser, Yuri Ushakov, the U.S. envoy appears to be advising the Russian on how to be on the president’s good facet.
“Just reiterate that you congratulate the president [Trump] on this achievement… that you respect that he is a man of peace and you’re just, you’re really glad to have seen it happen,” Witkoff said, according to the leaked dialog. “I think from that it’s going to be a really good call.”
“I told the president that you— that the Russian Federation has always wanted a peace deal. That’s my belief,” Witkoff allegedly added. “The issue is that we have two nations that are having a hard time coming to a compromise. I’m even thinking that maybe we set out like a 20-point peace proposal, just like we did in Gaza.
Witkoff has been a central figure in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Israel and Palestine. Throughout his tenure as U.S. envoy, he has visited Moscow several times and will meet again with Putin next week. However, he has not traveled to Kyiv.
Republican congressman Don Bacon said Witkoff “is completely on Russia’s side” and “cannot be trusted,” including that he needs to be eliminated from his place.
“Could a paid Russian agent do any worse? He should be fired,” Bacon said.
Likewise, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican, called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the talks, moderately than Witkoff.
“This is a major problem,” he said, responding to an X post reporting on the leaked conversations. “And one of the many reasons why these ridiculous side shows and secret meetings need to stop. Allow Secretary of State Marco Rubio to do his job in a fair and objective manner.”
Lawmakers from the other facet of the aisle have also joined in on the dialog, including Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California.
“Actual traitor,” he wrote on X about the U.S. Envoy. “Steve Witkoff is supposed to work for the United States, not Russia.”
According to Gossip Wire News, Ukraine is eager to settle for an amended 19-point peace plan, method shorter than the initially proposed 28-point plan, leaving some of the most contentious concepts of the unique plan— such as Ukraine giving up the Donbas area to Russia and surrendering its push to be part of NATO— out of the equation.
