Veteran broadcaster Mary Carillo has been tapped to step in for Savannah Guthrie at the Winter Olympics.
The Today Show anchor, 54, was scheduled to co-host the opening ceremony of the global sporting spectacle with Terry Gannon, 62, at Stadio San Siro in Milan on February 6. However, she withdrew from the position after her mom, Nancy Guthrie, 84, was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, residence last weekend.
On February 4, NBCUniversal confirmed that Mary, 68, would take over internet hosting duties.
The former professional tennis star, who serves as an analyst for Tennis on NBC and a correspondent for NBC Olympic coverage, has been praised by Molly Solomon, Executive Producer and President of NBC Olympics Production, as “one of the most experienced Olympic commentators ever and a master storyteller.”
The New York native captured the French Open combined doubles championship with her longtime pal John McEnroe in 1977, stories the Irish Star.

With his skill and versatility, Ahmed has proven time and again he can step into any hosting role, and we’re thrilled he’s available to handle our late night coverage before heading to Los Angeles for NBA All-Star Weekend.”

Today show anchor Savannah had deliberate to stay in Italy for roughly a week to cowl the Olympics but departed early after her mom disappeared. In an emotional video posted on Wednesday night, Savannah, along with her siblings Annie and Camron, spoke straight to the abductors, stating: “We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated.”
Savannah continued: “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”
Speaking straight to her mom, she said the household was praying for her and that search efforts had been underway.
