‘Masterpiece’ tops BBC 100 best TV series this century | UK News

The BBC requested more than 200 TV consultants from across the globe to title the biggest exhibits of the century. Published by BBC Culture in 2021, the checklist was based on votes from 206 critics, journalists, and industry professionals from 43 nations, each of whom submitted their 10 favorite exhibits of the twenty first century.

The closing checklist has a big selection of genres, from political satire and fantasy to darkish comedy and animated series. But it only consists of exhibits launched before 2021, which means a number of fashionable favourites didn’t make the cut. If the checklist had been up to date today, exhibits like The Last of Us, The Bear, Severance, Heartstopper, and Beef might simply climb the rankings.

What’s more, with Succession and Happy Valley now full, both may be rated even greater in future editions.

But topping the BBC’s checklist is a five-season epic that aired between 2002 and 2008. It’s a show that many critics and followers call the best of all time.

That could be The Wire, an American crime drama created by David Simon, a former police reporter in Baltimore.

Set in town he knew best, Simon explored how establishments, from the police and colleges to politics and media, have an effect on people on every aspect of the law.

Each season tackled a different half of the system, but all had been linked by a bigger story about energy, survival, and corruption.

Despite low viewing figures at the time and no major awards during its authentic run, The Wire has turn into one of the most revered and analysed exhibits in tv historical past.

Simon once said: “It’s about how institutions have an effect on individuals. Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution to which they are committed.”

Over the years audiences have fallen in love with the show. One viewer called it “a masterpiece of storytelling,” including: “This is the type of series that we just don’t see anymore.

“Various interesting characters with unique personalities guide the different storylines, all being told at once but coming together for the bigger picture.”

Another review said it was “probably one of the best written shows of all time. If not the best, in my opinion.”

The Wire at the moment holds a 95% average critic rating and 96% viewers rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
