PGA Tour spectators confronted backlash at The Players Championship after they had been caught booing Matt Fitzpatrick as he approached the tee on the 18th gap.

The European Ryder Cup star endured hostile treatment alongside American Cameron Young, who elevated his substantial web value following a important change prompted by his spouse.

Following Young’s remaining putt that secured victory over Fitzpatrick, spectators at the Players Championship erupted in chants of “USA! USA!”. Another comment stated: “Booing Fitzpatrick is fairly ridiculous. Love rooting for Americans but cmon” and “Booing Fitzpatrick on the 18th tee is wild. What is this, the Ryder Cup?”

Despite the backlash, Fitzpatrick responded post-round: “Listen, the group, that was actually kid’s play in contrast to Bethpage. If they suppose that that was something, then they need to reassess. Get your self up to New York.

“Listen, that’s how it is. That’s how it is. I would hope it’s the exact same if — well, it probably wouldn’t be because we’re a little bit more polite in Europe, I would say, but I would hope it would be of similar intensity in Europe.

“I knew it was coming. I had it with Jordan Spieth in 2023. Yeah, it is humorous to me. I discover it hilarious.”

The verbal harassment directed at the Europeans and McIlroy during the 2025 Ryder Cup was so severe, the PGA of America issued an apology to Luke Donald’s team following the event.

“I acquired a pretty e-mail from Derek Sprague apologizing,” McIlroy told BBC Sport whilst preparing for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in November.

“Erica labored with Derek at the PGA of America back in the day, so we all know Derek and his spouse fairly properly.

“He couldn’t have been more gracious or apologetic and he wrote us a lovely letter, which we really appreciated.”
