McIlroy confirms family plans after ending 2025 | Golf News

Rory McIlroy has wrapped up his 2025 season at the Australian Open and is keen to dive into the vacation festivities.

The Northern Irishman concluded with a final-round 69 at Royal Melbourne, capping off an extraordinary 2025 season where he achieved a profession grand slam by clinching the Masters and helped Team Europe secure the Ryder Cup trophy.

After a long and fruitful season, McIlroy, who not too long ago made an NFL admission in a message to the new PGA Tour boss, is prepared to kick back and chill out.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to a little break,” he shared. “I’ve had a pretty packed schedule post-summer with the Irish Open, Wentworth, Ryder Cup, and then I’ve been globe-trotting quite a bit these last couple of months.”

McIlroy’s travels took him to Asia for the DP World India Championship, the Middle East for Abu Dhabi and the DP World Tour Championship, and finally to Australia for the event at Royal Melbourne.

“I’m excited to have a little bit of downtime and finally reflect on everything, maybe watch a few of the tournaments back.

“I’ve probably not allowed myself to do that an excessive amount of. So yeah, trying ahead to the Christmas break, placing my toes up, having fun with a few glasses of wine and reminiscing about what an unbelievable yr it has been.”

McIlroy ended his season drawing record crowds to Royal Melbourne, expressing hope for future schedule changes that would give the event its own dedicated week.

“Obviously, it has been over 10 years since I performed in the Australian Open, and look at the scenes on the market this week,” McIlroy remarked after wrapping up with a two-under 69 that placed him in a tie for 14th. The crowds, the golf course were absolutely incredible. I said at the start of the week, this is a golf tournament that’s got so much potential, and I think it showed a little bit of that potential this week.”

McIlroy expanded on his imaginative and prescient for scheduling changes that may entice better consideration to golf as the game continues its upward trajectory.

“Look, obviously I would love to have a few more players come down to play, but again, it’s hard when there’s three tournaments going on in the schedule this week,” he explained.

“Again, there needs to be conversations had with people, much more important than me that set the schedules and do all that sort of stuff and hopefully the Australian Open can find a date that accommodates everyone and can at least have the option to come down and play.”
