Marvin Gaye’s death despatched shockwaves around the music world when he was killed by his own father at the age of 44.

The Motown legend’s death got here as he was on the cusp of a major comeback, having returned to the highlight with his 1982 hit single intimacyual Healing. His album Midnight Love was also massively fashionable and went platinum in America.

However, Marvin struggled with drug habit while on tour with the album and grew to become agitated. When he finally returned home from the tour, he targeted on caring for his mother and two sisters.

On Marvin’s return, his father, Marvin Gay Snr, wasn’t in the household home, having taken a business journey to Washington D.C. When the elder Marvin returned, his tense relationship with his son continued after years of feuding.

The singer’s two sisters finally moved out of the Los Angeles household home due to the arguments Marvin would have with his father.

Speaking in 1985, a 12 months after Marvin’s death, his sister Jeanne claimed their father had warned his son on a number of occassions that if he ever touched him, he would kill him.

The household celebrated Christmas together in 1983, during which time Marvin gave his father a .38 Special pistol so he might defend himself against doable intruders.

By April 1984, however, issues had gone downhill. On April 1, 1984, an argument broke out between Marvin Sr and his spouse, Alberta Gay.

The youthful Marvin tried to stop the argument, but his father continued to shout in his mom’s face. As the argument grew more and more heated, Marvin pushed his father and began bodily attacking him.

Alberta later told Ritz, “Marvin hit him. I shouted for him to stop, but he paid no attention to me. He gave my husband some hard kicks.”

Just minutes later, Marvin Snr left the room before returning with the gun his son had gifted him less than 4 months earlier. Marvin Snr then shot his son twice in the chest.

Marvin’s brother Frankie Gaye and his spouse Irene Duncan heard the gunshots from the visitor home on the property. Frankie rushed to attend to his brother before Marvin shared his remaining phrases, “I got what I wanted… I couldn’t do it myself, so I had him do it.”

Writing in his guide Marvin Gaye, My Brother, Frankie claimed the Motown singer added, “It’s good, I ran my race; there’s no more left in me.”

Marvin’s sister Jeanne Gay also spoke about what occurred, telling Divided Soul, “He put himself out of his misery. He brought relief to Mother by finally getting her husband out of her life. And he punished Father, by making certain that the rest of his life would be miserable.”
