Forest Service Ditches the Swamps of D.C., Heads | Political News

Turns out, the previous noticed that the nation’s capital was constructed on a swamp isn’t precisely true; it was principally constructed on strong, elevated ground, although there have been some marshlands that have been stuffed in over time.

Still, “swamp” completely describes what goes on there in the modern-day, and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced Tuesday that the division’s Forest Service will likely be transferring its headquarters from the imply streets of Washington, D.C. to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The transfer not only reduces the federal authorities’s footprint in the capital, but it places the HQ nearer to where most of the forests they really oversee are positioned.

In a assertion, the division said they’d be conducting a “sweeping restructuring” of their operations:

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Forest Service announced it’s going to transfer its headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah, and start a sweeping restructuring of the company to transfer management nearer to the forests and communities it serves.

For an company whose lands, companions, and operational challenges are overwhelmingly concentrated in the West, the shift represents a structural reset and a common-sense strategy to improve mission supply.

By establishing a western headquarters in Salt Lake City, the @ForestService will likely be nearer to the forests we handle—enhancing stewardship, strengthening operations, and saving taxpayer {dollars}.

This transfer aligns the Forest Service with the realities on the ground across the western United States while streamlining how the company operates and delivers outcomes. It ensures choices are made nearer to the land itself, strengthening accountability and advancing the core mission of managing and defending our nation’s forests.

It’s a daring transfer, but considerably of an apparent one. Why have bureaucrats in fits calling the pictures from afar when most of the related points are hundreds of miles away?

Even if it’s a commonsense step, it’s exhausting to think about this occurring under any other fashionable administration. Team Trump continues to shake issues up in methods we’re just not used to seeing.

Seems Like a Good Idea – Department of Agriculture Moving Closer to Agriculture

In July 2025, as our Ward Clark reported, Rollins had already overseen the USDA’s transfer from D.C. to decentralize operations into 5 different places: Raleigh, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Salt Lake City, Utah. This just provides to that effort to put companies in areas where they’re needed.

Republican Utah Senator John Curtis welcomed the transfer and said that since a big proportion of our public lands are nowhere close to D.C., this was the proper factor to do:

Western communities live with, work on, and steward these lands every day, and bringing management nearer will lead to more informed, sensible, and responsive management.

Perhaps the Forest Service can ship some specialists to California to educate Gov. Gavin Newsom how to cut back wildfire risk, since apparently that’s an alien idea to him.

In the meantime, take pleasure in Utah, forestry people. If you haven’t been there, it’s one of the most spectacularly lovely states in our union. And in contrast to in Washington, D.C., there are tons and tons of forests there.

No phrase yet if Judge James Boasberg will soar in and throw down a momentary restraining order on the plan.
