My 9/11 Story — When Two Major Events Collide – | Political News
I can keep in mind my mother telling me about where she was and what she was doing on November 22, 1963, the day President John Kennedy was assassinated. She was a younger housewife at home, taking care of that home and watching “As the World Turns,” when Walter Cronkite broke in to inform the world that Kennedy had been shot. She said she tried to call my dad and couldn’t get through; all the telephone strains had been jammed. For those of us who watched the horror of September 11, 2001, either on the streets of New York City or live on tv, we did the same factor. This is my story.

In my former life, I used to be a Pharmacy Technician. For most of that life, I labored second shift in hospital settings, normally 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Needless to say, I wasn’t up as early as most of us. But like any other Tuesday, I used to be up around 9 AM. Like most days, I turned the radio on proper before 11:00 AM (I’m in Central Time in St. Louis) to tune in to Rush Limbaugh. I did not get Rush; I bought local news guys speaking about closings and cancellations as if there have been six inches of snow on the ground. I turned on the TV and, of course, noticed what they had been speaking about.
What offers my story a bit of a twist is that I used to be three weeks away from getting married. My now-husband Randy and I had been dwelling in my tiny condominium that was now cluttered with bins of reception decorations, a bag of returned RSVP invites, and a datebook that was holding all the issues I had left to do before the big day on observe.
A little bit while later, my mother called to see if I knew what was occurring. I told her I did. We talked for a few more minutes, and maybe it was the collective intuition of every American that morning to say “I love you” to your family members because we both did at the same time. I called Randy and told him to come home. At that level, no one knew what was coming next.
25 years later, 250 years later, and forevermore, our flag will fly for justice and freedom.

Like every other American family, we just watched TV until we both went to work that afternoon. Once I bought there, in the times of cellphone infancy, a TV we often used for persevering with teaching programs in the pharmacy had been wheeled out of storage and hooked up so we might keep up with what was occurring. We labored and saved issues working, but with one eye on that TV. When I might go up on the flooring to ship meds, I might often stop in the corridor outdoors of affected person rooms where I might see TVs.
When we bought home that evening, we noticed those eerie nighttime pictures of Ground Zero. Smoke still rising from the wreckage, enhanced by the spotlights on those working feverishly to discover any hint of survivors. I do not know about anybody else, but I might really feel exhaustion, mental and bodily, coming from the TV screen.
We are all different people 25 years later than we had been that day. On a personal degree, our lives have modified. I grew to become a spouse, graduated from faculty at age 57, and modified careers. My fellow Americans have also modified jobs and careers, grew to become spouses, mother and father, and grandparents. But now we have modified in other profound methods as effectively. The world is a a lot more harmful place, and often the people we elect do not appear to share the sense of urgency that we do about it. Instead, they need to be good to people who have said outright that they need to kill us.

I did not get into politics until years later with the Tea Party. But it might have been 9/11 that lit my own personal inside spark. So many people marvel if we are going to ever be who we had been as a nation on September 12, 2001, ever again- the unity we felt merely because we had been Americans. I do not know. But I want I did, so I had it to look ahead to.
What I do know is that we must keep the recollections and the information of that day alive to train those who weren’t around what occurred and, more importantly, why. But not just the photographs and the tales now we have seen before, but our own footage and our tales too.
