New Details Revealed As Officials Hold Morning | Political News
Officials in Washington, D.C., held a press convention Thursday morning to present an update relating to the horrific taking pictures of two West Virginia National Guard members in the nation’s capital on Wednesday afternoon.Â
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeannine Pirro led off the press convention. She recognized the guardsmen who have been shot as 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe — both of whom had just been sworn in less than 24 hours before they have been shot.Â

According to Pirro, both guardsmen have undergone surgical procedure and are in essential condition. Their households are with them.Â
The alleged shooter, who has since been recognized as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who got here to the U.S. in September 2021 in the aftermath of the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, acted as a lone gunman. He used a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.Â
Per Pirro, the shooter struck one of the guards, then leaned over and shot that guard again before taking pictures the other guard. She didn’t specify the quantity of occasions each guard was shot, but did word that the .357 is a six-shooter.Â
Pirro acknowledged that the relevant costs at current are three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during an act of violence. Should either of the guards go, the charge will likely be illegal killing One.Â
Pirro wrapped her remarks by addressing the shooter immediately: You picked the improper goal, the improper metropolis, the improper nation, and you may be sorry.Â
FBI Director Kash Patel also spoke. He confirmed that the taking pictures is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The FBI is executing a number of search warrants across the nation, including at the suspect’s last identified home in Bellingham, Washington.Â
Patel also indicated that he has spoken with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who confirmed that Lakanwal had a relationship with companion forces. They are investigating that facet of his background to embody any identified associates.Â

Patel also laid the taking pictures immediately at the toes of the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent failure to vet.Â
General Leland Blanchard, the Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard, spoke briefly. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also spoke briefly, starting by echoing Blanchard’s remarks, and then noting, “Somebody drove across the country, came to Washington, D.C., to attack America. That person will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”Â

Following their initial remarks, the officers took a handful of questions. Patel was requested about a connection to San Diego and additional explained that once the suspect was recognized, they tracked down his last identified residence in Washington state and executed search warrants there, where quite a few digital devices have been seized. Pursuant to that, and identified associates of the suspect, the investigation expanded to San Diego. He didn’t elaborate additional on that level.
Pirro confirmed that the suspect was shot by another guardsman. Then, when requested by a reporter about the fact that some are blaming President Trump for having the National Guard in D.C., to start with, Pirro unloaded:Â
