Newsom claims Trump sent Guard troops to LA | Political News
California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused President Donald Trump of deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles “without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep,” amid a bitter row between the 2 leaders.
In a social media post on Monday, Newsom shared two photos exhibiting a number of National Guard members sleeping on the ground. He claimed Trump was “treating our troops disrespectfully.”
“You sent your troops here without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep. Here they are — being forced to sleep on the floor, piled on top of one another,” Newsom wrote on X.
The pair have been embroiled in an escalating row after Trump deployed around 300 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Sunday following three days of protests against immigration raids.
Trump’s resolution marked the first time in 60 years that a president had activated the National Guard to a state without a request from its governor.
The troops had been deployed after clashes broke out between protesters and federal immigration authorities on Saturday. Agents unleashed tear gasoline, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls, and protesters hurled rocks at Border Patrol vehicles.
Newsom stated he deliberate to file a lawsuit against the deployment, calling it an “outrageous overreach” that was stoking “terror” among residents.
“This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution,” Newsom wrote on X.
“The illegal order he signed could allow him to send the military into ANY STATE HE WISHES.”
California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated on Monday that the state would search a court order declaring the president’s federalizing of the guard was illegal and a restraining order to stop the deployment.
Trump on Monday claimed that Los Angeles would have been “completely obliterated” if he had not deployed the Guard.
He also backed threats by his “border czar” Tom Homan to arrest officers who impede the immigration enforcement effort, including Newsom.
“I would do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great,” Trump stated. “Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing. He’s done a terrible job.”
