John F. Kennedy wrote his Pulitzer Prize–successful tome “Profiles in Courage” in 1956, whereby he mentioned eight U.S. senators who took courageous stands despite political dangers. They believed it was the appropriate factor to do.

If the ebook is ever up to date, it is unlikely former President Joe Biden can be included. He lately told his former chief of employees, Ron Klain, that he has made his determination on endorsing a candidate in one of the most pivotal election battles in the nation — the gubernatorial race in the union’s most populous state, California.

His reply? Nobody.

This was our commander-in-chief barely 16 months in the past, yet now he doesn’t have the — cough — guts to make a call. We may call his chapter “Profiles in the Lack of a Backbone.”

I’m no fan of former California attorney basic Xavier Becerra, who has seen a bump in the polls currently but also an increase in assaults from his rivals. If I had been him, though, I’d be fairly ticked off about now:

As Xavier Becerra campaigns for California governor on his long file of authorities service, Democratic insiders have puzzled if he’ll obtain a late marketing campaign endorsement from his last boss, former President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The reply seems to be no.

Mr. Biden lately told Ron Klain, Mr. Biden’s former chief of employees, that he wouldn’t make an endorsement in the race, Mr. Klain said. But that will not be meant as a slight against Mr. Becerra.

“He told me that he is a big fan of Xavier, he likes Xavier, appreciates the job he did, but that there are other people in the race who he also has a relationship with,” Mr. Klain said in an interview this week. “He’s just going to stay neutral.”

It appears sort of just like the outdated line, “I love you so much that I think I should continue to see other women — I don’t want to limit you.”

But on second thought, possibly Becerra will secretly be happy:

Many polls have Becerra operating close with zany Dem billionaire and advocate of violence Tom Steyer, but for the first time in many years, there are literally two Republicans who have a probability: businessman and former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

Becerra has only risen to the top of the Democrat subject because his rivals are all second-teamers: the poisonous Katie Porter, the mild-mannered-but-uninteresting mayor of San Jose, Matt Mahan — who boasts about how his metropolis is doing properly on the homelessness and crime points without mentioning that his metropolis’s housing is among the most costly in the world — Steyer, and a few other also-rans.

Like Biden, former VP Kamala Harris and current Gov. Gavin Newsom have also refused to show that they’ve an curiosity in who runs their state come January 2027. You may call this “letting the voters decide” or “declining to pick sides” — or you might call it what it’s: weak spot. They’re too scared to alienate anybody because they don’t even have real convictions, so they just select to keep silent.

Compare this to our current president, Donald Trump, who was also lately confronted with a robust alternative: Republican Sen. John Cornyn or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for Senate. They both had professionals and cons, and Trump may have endorsed either or stayed on the sidelines. But he took the more tough highway and settled on his choose: Paxton. Whether you agree with his call will not be the purpose; it’s that he had the management to make it — not cower in his workplace and wait to see which manner the winds blew.

Joe Biden stepped back into the political area for at some point and carried out like he commonly did during his one disastrous time period: he faceplanted. To paraphrase one thing my mother used to inform me, “If you don’t have something useful to say, don’t say anything at all.”
