Ozzy Osbourne: Crowds line streets to watch funeral procession

Music legend Ozzy Osbourne was identified for his wild on-stage antics, but his spouse, Sharon Osbourne, was really the mastermind behind some of them, including one that failed miserably.

Everyone is aware of of the Prince of Darkness’ bat-eating incident, but only diehard followers bear in mind the time he completed out a show on a mechanical hand that also flung meat components out at the gang.

The second occured on the Diary of a Madman tour and was the mind youngster of Sharon, but there was a bit of technical difficulties that left Ozzy coated in guts.

During an look on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1997, the host talked about that many of Ozzy’s wild on-stage antics had been Sharon’s concepts.

Ozzy said, “For instance one time, in the early Eighties, when it was all this gothic thing, you know, gothic sets and whatever, my wife comes up with this idea, she says, ‘Ozzy I got this great idea. You come out in this big giant hand.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?'”

Ozzy continued, “She said, ‘At the end of the show, we’ll put this big giant hand and you sit in the middle of the hand and the fingers all got pyro flames in it. And there’s this big sling, a sling shot at the back of it.'”

The Crazy Train singer explained that Sharon deliberate to have tons of real meat, including testicles, in the sling shot.

“Well not human testicles,” Ozzy laughed, before O’Brien joked, “You wouldn’t do that because that would be absurd.”

Continuing the story of the giant mechanical hand, Ozzy said, “I’m in the middle of it. And at the back there’s this sling with all these big balls and everything and all this goo.

“Now, she says, ‘When the pyro fingers explode, you are going to press this button and these terrible [guts] will fly into the viewers.’ Now, ‘Great, honey.’ So, what occurs. Unbeknowst to me, this rubber band has been taunt from 2 o’clock in the afternoon until about 11 o’clock in the night.

“So, I come for my big finale, and I push the thing, and it goes [imitates slow slap to the back of his head], ‘Slap!’ Now, I’m standing there like the Prince of Darkness with all this blood and snot. And I just went, ‘Good night folks.'”

O’Brien joked as he cracked up with laughter, “I’d done anything to see that.”

Nothing comes close to the bat-biting incident, though.

In January 1982, Ozzy was two months into the same gruelling tour selling his second solo album. After the custom of catapulting items of uncooked meat and animal components at the gang had began, somebody threw a live bat onstage at a show at Des Moines’ Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

The singer thought it was a rubber toy. In his 2010 autobiography I Am Ozzy, Ozzy said he picked it up, stuffed it in his mouth, and bit down.

“Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong. For a start my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid,” he recalled. “Then the head in my mouth twitched.”

“Somebody threw a bat. I just thought it was a rubber bat. And I picked it up and put it in my mouth. I bit into it,” he said. The singer realized, “Oh no, it’s real. It was a real live bat.”

Howver, Ozzy did not always insist the bat was alive when it was thrown at him. In 2006, he gave the BBC a model of the story that was very different.

“This bat comes on. I thought it was one of them Hallowe’en joke bats ‘cos it had some string around its neck,” he said. “I bite into it, and I look to my left and Sharon [Osbourne, his wife and then manager] was going [gesturing no].

“And I’m like, what you speaking about? She [says], ‘it is a useless real bat’. And I’m… I do know now!”
