Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed on Saturday that the beaches of 4 major European nations had been being stormed by what he deemed to be “dangerous ideologies.”
Hegseth, who spoke at a ceremony commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, used the metaphor to issue a sharp warning to the modern-day “invasion.” During his speech on the shores of Normandy, France, Hegseth urged Western leaders to act decisively and called for renewed strength across the transatlantic alliance.
“Sadly, today, different European beaches are stormed by different dangerous ideologies,” Hegseth told the assembled crowd. “Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria.”
“Boats and men arrive. When will European capitals do something about that invasion? Or is it too late?”He added. The Secretary of War didn’t elaborate on which ideologies he was talking about.
Hegseth also warned that European leaders had grown too “comfortable” with their freedoms since World War II. “The men who fought and died here restored freedom to Europe,” he said.
