Phil Mickelson expressed condolences after Lou Holtz’s household shared their disappointment for the passing of the Notre Dame legend on social media.

Holtz handed away on Wednesday, March 4 at the age of 89 in Orlando, Florida. Holtz was married to Beth Barcus from 1961 until she died in 2020, and is survived by 4 youngsters, including longtime school coach Skip Holtz.

Six-time major winner Mickelson commented on the post, sharing his disappointment and former experiences with the coach.

“I’m so sorry for your loss,” wrote Mickelson.

“His speech to team USA at the 2008 Ryder cup was the best I’ve ever heard and still impacts me today. I’m so appreciative for the small amount time we shared and I know you feel grateful to have had so much with him. It still hurts though and I’m so sorry.”

Holtz’s son, Skip shared a photograph of them hugging and wrote a unhappy message on the post.

“My father passed away today resting peacefully at home,” wrote Skip on X.

“I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers over the last couple months! He was successful, but more important he was Significant.”

Right after the death, Holtz’s household shared a assertion and a social media post saying the death.

“Holtz is remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others,” the Notre Dame legend’s household said in a assertion saying his death. “His influence extended far beyond the football field through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the many players, colleagues, and communities shaped by his leadership.

“He is survived by his 4 youngsters, 9 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral preparations, including a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, can be announced as particulars are finalized.”

Born in Follansbee, West Virginia, Holtz was the son of bus driver Andrew Holtz and Anne Marie Tychonoievich. He was raised as a Catholic in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from East Liverpool High School.
