There’s been a scarcity of officials for high college sports activities in current years. Daniel Ashikian, 21, and Casey Pope, 18, have answered the call.
They’re in their second season of officiating basketball video games in the San Fernando Valley unit.
“It’s better than working at McDonald’s,” Pope said.
Pope performed basketball at Monroe High and immediately needed to develop into an official. Ashikian has performed basketball for years on his own and needed to keep concerned in the sport. They labored a junior varsity ladies’ recreation at Granada Hills this week.
It’s robust enough for veteran officials to deal with coaches, gamers and followers. The fact these two younger officials have taken on the problem gives hope for the future — that other former gamers will be part of them and develop into officials.
