Scarlett Moffatt details her motherhood struggles as | UK News
Former Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt has confessed it’s troublesome juggling motherhood alongside her media profession as she will get set to return to screens in a new Channel 4 show. The 35-year-old mum of one took time away from the highlight following the beginning of her son Jude in June 2023 but is back fronting a documentary about aspect hustles entitled Can You Make 10k in 10 Days?
Speaking completely to Express.co.uk over Zoom, as Jude loved himself in tender play, the busy mom said: “You do have to sacrifice some things. I could just lie, but you do have to sacrifice. Working has meant I haven’t got to see Scott (her partner) and Jude as much as I normally would, which makes me sad. But I just keep thinking it’s a bit of short-term pain for long-term gain. Whenever I’m having a day where I wish I was with Jude I remember I’m doing it for him because I have to make money somehow. And so I just keep thinking, he’ll understand when he’s older.
My mum and dad always worked really hard – I don’t know if it’s a northern thing. But I’m trying to work smarter rather than harder now, so it’s just managing my time really. Sleep is the (main) sacrifice,” she quipped. “For the first two years of Jude being right here, because he is our miracle child. I just put all my effort into him, and I did not do any work for two years actually. I sacrificed my profession so that I might spend time with Jude.
“And then me and Scott were having a chat, and I said: ‘I really miss speaking to adults on a daily basis. I miss my work. I love it. It brings me joy.’ So Scott now took a two year career break, so now he’s daddy daycare while I work, which I know we in a really privileged position being able to do that.
“When I look at my buddies and the children go to nursery and stuff it is laborious. We’re all just attempting our best so I do not suppose there’s a magic components. I feel just lack of sleep is how we cope.”
Scarlett’s new project should be of interest to those who face the same struggle as her. Inspired by the concept that Briton’s side hustles, many of which can be done from a laptop or phone, are earning them an average of £10,000 a year Scarlett has investigated the reality of these money making schemes to see what works.
Featuring people who have turned their side hustle into succesful businesses such as Lisa Dobbs of Wee Wooly Wonderfuls Crafting, who has made £400,000 over eight years, and reseller Becky Chorlton who makes £85,000 a year, Scarlett explores different ways of making extra cash to see what works.
One thing she admits she wasn’t a fan of is dropshipping – an e-commerce model where you sell products online without holding inventory. “I feel within my ethical compass, it did really feel icky, and I made that actually clear. Because you are not bodily touching something. You’re not checking to see how it seems. It just felt dodgy. I do know it is completely tremendous, but it did really feel like, ‘how am I promoting these objects that I never see?’ “
However print on demand, which she described as “wonderful” proved a hit with Scarlett even saying she could see herself doing it outside of the show. “Basically you just create a product, like a mug or a sweatshirt, and then they do every part else for you. But it is your design on these prints and stuff. And I really bought some issues without promoting. Literally just on Etsy I managed to promote some bits.
“And that can just keep rolling in the background. If you’re on your phone you can have a quick check, or upload more things. So that one is a really good one.”
