In July, DermaRite Industries, a producer of skincare and hygiene products for healthcare settings, recalled hand soaps due to the products being contaminated with Burkholderia cepecia, an infectious group of bacteria. 

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded the hand cleaning soap recall on Aug. 28 to embody hand sanitizer, deodorant, shampoo, and more. These recalled products have been distributed nationwide in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. 

The FDA warns customers that these recalled products with Burkholderia cepecia might lead to life-threatening infections if used by immunosuppressed people or anybody aiding immunosuppressed people. However, there’s also a risk for healthy people with any minor pores and skin lesion, as this bacteria can lead to local infections. According to the CDC, this bacteria poses little medical risk for healthy people. 

For anybody immunocompromised, the dangers are extreme. Immunocompromised people who used these recalled products run the risk of the infection spreading to the bloodstream, which can lead to life-threatening sepsis.

If you might have one of these recalled products, DermaRite has notified all distributors and prospects by electronic mail to study their products and destroy any affected products.
