Republican Curtis Sliwa addressed his supporters to concede as Zohran Mamdani was named the winner of the NYC Mayoral election.
“This movement continues on,” a tearful Sliwa said to media. “The most powerful people in the world turned others against us. Let me warn the new leader, if you try to implement socialism, if you try to render our police weak and impotent, if you forsake the people’s public safety, we’re not only organizing, but we are mobilizing,” he added.
Sliwa got just 8% of the vote so far, with just over 1.3 million of the votes counted.
Just hours after the polls closed, Mamdani was on course to easily beat Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, with a lead of 49%. His stunning victory comes following months of heated campaigning and a shocking landslide win in the Democratic primaries back in June.
Mamdani will now be in charge of not only leading one of the largest cities in the country, but also battling the Trump administration as it continues its threats of deploying National Guard troops to the city to combat crime and undocumented migration.
Sliwa appeared in a bizarre rant in the New York City subway on Halloween, which took aim at his opponents, Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani. Taking to the Subway system on Halloween, he delivered a holiday-themed address dedicated to his wife, who he said loved it, which also compared Cuomo and Mamdani to a zombie and a vampire.
Sliwa has been polling in a distant third behind the Democratic Socialist candidate, who won the primary for his party in June, and the former Governor, who stayed in the race as an Independent after losing that same race.
And while Mamdani, who has been a favorite to win for months, is facing some plummets in his numbers as Cuomo gains ground, he is still largely believed to be on a path to victory.
“Zohran Mamdani, who’s had a meteoric rise in the Democratic Party as a socialist…he has offered treats, treats, treats, treats,” Sliwa said. “Free! Free! Free! Free! Free! But we all know nothing’s for free. And just like a vampire, like Dracula, Mamdani desires to deal with everybody to freebies, while taxpayers decide up the tab. It will suck the taxpayers dry,” Sliwa beforehand said.
