SLO County airport is going to close for 2 days. Here’s when and why

The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport will close down for two days as enhancements are made to the airfield.

The 55-hour closure will happen from Monday morning at 7 a.m. to Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., according to a news release from the airport. No flights will run during the closure.

During the closure, geometric enhancements will probably be made to key intersections of the airport’s main taxiway — where grounded airplanes drive that connects the runway and other areas of the airfield, such as parking, terminals and hangars — the release said.

“Taxiways are the arteries of an airport, guiding every aircraft to and from the runway,” Courtney Johnson, SLO County Director of Airports, said in the release. “These improvements will streamline operations and allow us to serve passengers and partners with greater efficiency.”

The $16.5 million project was funded by a Federal Aviation Administration grant with matching contributions from the airport.

“Airports are critical infrastructure for our regional economy, connecting businesses, visitors and residents to opportunities across the state and the nation,” Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg said in the release. “By making these important investments in the airfield, we are not only enhancing aviation safety, but also ensuring that the Central Coast remains competitive and accessible for years to come.”
