Phil Mickelson feelings on being a Ryder Cup | Golf News

Phil Mickelson, the LIV Golf star and one of the most notable American Ryder Cup gamers, has candidly shared his ideas on probably being the Ryder Cup captain.

Mickelson, who has participated in 47 matches throughout his profession, has an spectacular report with 18 wins, 22 losses, seven halves, and a whole of 21.5 factors. Despite his huge expertise, he has only been named a vice captain once (2021) and never as a captain.

The star confessed that he believes his probability to be named captain has handed.

“I don’t feel I’m the right guy to be involved with the team because I’m a very divisive character right now, if you will, and I understand that,” he said in 2024 [h/t The Golfing Gazette]. Mickelson speculated that his resolution to be a part of the Saudi-backed circuit may need strained some relationships.

“The players on the PGA Tour, there’s a lot of hostilities towards me, and I don’t feel I’d be the best leader for them,” he overtly admitted. “I knew I was going to take some hits going forward. I’m OK with that. And as a divisive individual. I don’t think I’m the best unifier going forward for the Ryder Cup, and that’s fine because I’ve had so many great memories with it.”

Despite declaring that he would not need the captaincy function due to considerations about probably dividing the crew, the golf celebrity has never shied away from voicing his criticisms, even when it’d damage crew morale.

Back in 2014, Mickelson publicly challenged captain Tom Watson’s strategic selections concerning participant partnerships, boldly sharing his sincere evaluation with the media and instantly confronting his crew chief. “There were two things that allowed us to play our best, I think, that Paul Azinger [the previous captain] did, and one was he got everybody invested in the process,” he said at the time [h/t Talk Sport].

“He got everybody invested in who they were going to play with, who the picks were going to be, who was going to be in their pod, who — when they would play, and they had a great leader for each pod.

“In my case, we had Ray Floyd, and we frolicked together and we had been all invested in each other’s play… And the other factor that Paul did rather well was he had a great sport plan for us, you recognize, how we had been going to go about doing this.

“How we were going to go about playing together; golf ball, format, what we were going to do, if so-and-so is playing well, if so-and-so is not playing well, we had a real game plan.

“Those two issues helped us deliver out our best golf. And I believe that, you recognize, we all do the best that we are able to and we’re all attempting our hardest, and I’m just wanting back at what gave us the most success.

“Because we use that same process in The Presidents Cup and we do really well. Unfortunately, we have strayed from a winning formula in 2008 for the last three Ryder Cups, and we need to consider maybe getting back to that formula that helped us play our best.”

Mickelson and Team USA had been defeated by Team Europe that 12 months with a rating of 16 1/2 to 11 1/2. Interestingly, this victory highlighted European dominance, as Europe gained eight out of ten competitions from 1995 to 2014.
