Strait of Hormuz: Another oil tanker attacked as | Political News
Another oil tanker was struck close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important choke factors and the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.
The incident marked another assault in the strategic space, triggering an explosion and leaving one crew member lifeless. According to Oman’s Maritime Security Centre (MSC), an oil tanker flying the flag of the Republic of the Marshall Islands was attacked by a drone 52 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat.
The vessel was carrying roughly 59,463 metric tonnes of cargo. One Indian crew member was killed.
This comes after Oman’s MSC reported a first assault against a Palau-flagged oil tanker off the coast of Musandam on Sunday.
Twenty-one people of a number of nationalities have been on board, including 16 Indians, 4 Bangladeshi, and one Ukrainian national. The crew was evacuated by Oman’s MSC utilizing a industrial vessel.
It stays unclear who attacked the oil tanker. Omani authorities said they’re monitoring the condition of the attacked tanker and issuing needed warnings to ships passing through the same maritime space in the Gulf of Oman, close to the Strait of Hormuz.
Following joint strikes on Iran by U.S. and Israel over the weekend, which killed the nation’s Supreme Leader and more than 500 civilians so far, reviews emerged alleging that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had despatched messages to ships intending to use the Strait of Hormuz stating that “no vessels will be permitted to pass.”
However, no official assertion has been issued confirming a formal closure of the strait. Iranian media have claimed the Strait of Hormuz has been successfully shut.
Analysis by real-time data analytics firm Kpler revealed that only three tankers carrying 2.8 million barrels transited the strait on March 1, an 86% drop from the 2026 average of 19.8 million barrels per day. Twenty-one million barrels have been transported by 15 tankers on Feb. 27, rising to 21.6 million barrels on 18 vessels on Saturday.
