Tim McGraw has said he had to fight to keep a “controversial” song in one of his albums because “nobody liked it.”

The nation singer has launched 17 studio albums during his profession, 10 of which have reached primary on the Top Country Albums charts, with his 1994 breakthrough album Not a Moment Too Soon being the top nation album of 1994.

In a latest interview, 58-year-old Tim was requested to share an instance of a song of his he thought was “lightning in a bottle” and he replied, “Indian Outlaw – because I had that song for my first album and nobody liked it.”

The musician revealed the label, producer James Stroud, and his collaborator Byron Gallymore weren’t followers of the monitor.

Tim said the label told him the song was “bad” and “too controversial” – even going as far as telling him that “it wasn’t country music” and wouldn’t be performed on the radio.

Recalling the first evening he heard the song in the Hall of Fame Lounge and Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, when songwriters Tommy and Max D. Barnes performed it for him live, Tim said he “learned it and started playing it in all the clubs around town, the honky-tonks around town.”

He claimed that while touring and enjoying the song around the nation, he would need to play it a number of instances a evening “because people loved it so much.”

Due to the success of the song, he said he pleaded with his report label to embrace it on his debut album – and he was allowed to.

Explaining the explanation why the label thought the song was controversial, the singer explained that “it was stereotypical, and it was sort of a play on Native American stereotypes.”

“And there was a lot of controversy around it, and I understood the controversy and I wasn’t upset about the controversy,” he revealed on The Tim Ferriss Show.

He added, “In fact, I met with several Native American leaders. Some liked the song, some didn’t like the song.

“And my reply was, ‘Look, I perceive what your considerations are. The song’s not meant to be that approach, I perceive your considerations.

“My opinion, if you need to go after me in order to raise attention and awareness, by all means, use my song for that.

“If you prefer it or do not prefer it, if you may make one thing good occur from it, then by all means, I’m not going to be offended.'”

The admission comes months after Tim revealed that he came close to stepping away from his decades-long career after enduring several major surgeries and health challenges over the past two years.

He made the revelation during a performance at the Yaamava’ Theater in Highland, California, in October, where he spoke to fans about the toll his physical struggles had taken on him.

“I’ve had 4 back surgical procedures and double knee replacements, just in the last couple of years,” he told the audience, according to Parade.

The Louisiana native explained that the series of procedures not only limited his physical health, but also affected his mental health.

“After going through all of that for a couple of years and getting depressed over it and all of those issues – stuff not working proper…And this spring, before I had my closing back surgical procedure, issues had been getting actually dangerous,” he admitted.

“So I used to be severely considering and determining how to stroll away.”

Tim said the thought of leaving music was difficult but, at the time, seemed inevitable. “I did not need to, but I did not suppose it was going to get better,” he said.

He went on to reassure followers that his recovery has since taken a constructive flip and that he’s back to feeling strong enough to carry out again.
