Tom Aspinall's father provides eye injury | MMA News
Late in the opening spherical of the UFC 321 main event last Saturday, challenger Ciryl Gane unintentionally poked champion Tom Aspinall in both eyes rendering him unable to continue. With Aspinall unable to see, the battle was ruled a no contest.
It’s been days since the event and Aspinall still cannot see. His father, Andy, supplied an update on his son’s accidents.
“Just bothered that me kid’s got a job that he likes and he wants to do it and he’s been fouled in a contest. The guy who fouled him, no consequence to him and now there’s a consequence to Tom. Hopefully it’ll be alright, but it might not be,” he said on Tom Aspinall’s YouTube channel.
“His right eye, he still can’t see anything. Said it’s just gray. They tested him on words and he just couldn’t see it anything. His left eye, 50 percent. He went down about four letters and then couldn’t see the letters. So, one’s really, really blurry and one’s still not working,” the elder Aspinall explained.
The heavyweight champion noticed an eye specialist who informed him that the poke was ‘dangerous,’ and that the battle ought to have been stopped. The quantity of injury carried out stays unclear.
“His vision on the eye that’s the best eye, his eye wasn’t following properly, so those muscles weren’t working strong enough to go this way. This one just wasn’t working that good at all,” Andy said.
Aspinall has more assessments lined up this week, including a CT scan. His health is his father’s only concern.
“For me, everything is about his health. It’s not fighting. That’s just want he chose to do as a job. And one of the consequences is you can get hurt, but it’s a bad consequence if you lose your sight and especially by a foul,” he said.
