Trump Administration Announces New Year

Trump’s order signed Wednesday retains in place a 25% tariff he imposed in September on those items, but delays for another 12 months a 30% tariff on upholstered furnishings and 50% tariff on kitchen cupboards and vanities.

The will increase, which had been set to take impact Jan. 1, come as the Republican president instituted a broad swath of taxes on imported items to deal with commerce imbalances and other points.

The president has said the tariffs on furnishings are needed to “bolster American industry and protect national security.”

The White House proclamation invoked Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (Act) in order to accomplish this.
