Trump could destroy Newsoms political career as

As Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom continue to go head to head, the ordeal could be make or break for Newsom’s political career, a couple of specialists told the Irish Star.

The preventing between the right-wing Republican president and the left-leaning Democratic governor — who is one of the names being tossed around for the get together’s presidential nomination in 2028 — started in June, when mass protests broke out in Los Angeles against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids going down across the town.

The raids have been ordered by Trump as half of his push to deport 1000’s of undocumented migrants from the nation each month.

Demonstrations turned violent in many areas, however, with activists throwing gadgets at ICE brokers and setting small fires. Some vandalized storefronts, looting the products inside, and triggered widespread harm in some areas.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass responded by implementing a curfew for a 1-mile radius of downtown L.A., and police forces have been mobilized in the town to guarantee peaceable demonstrations. But that wasn’t enough for Trump.

Shortly after the protests broke out, which Trump referred to as “riots,” he federalized the California National Guard and mobilized over 4,000 guard members, which was adopted by the mobilization of around 700 U.S. Marines.

The federalization of the National Guard prompted Newsom and his attorney normal, Rob Bonta, to sue Trump. They allege that it constituted an abuse of energy and marked an “unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Under federal law, the president is required to ask a state governor for permission before sending in the National Guard, Newsom and Bonta argued, citing the U.S. Constitution and Title 10, which they alleged that Trump violated.

Trump, at one level, called for Newsom’s arrest for his handling of the protests. And since the demonstrations have died down, Trump has constantly lobbed assaults at Newsom in press conferences, calling him “incompetent.”

The president has highlighted the high-speed rail project that would join L.A. to San Francisco as effectively, which he believes has been dealt with poorly — he blamed Newsom for that and claimed that he could have gotten it completed a lot quicker than the governor.

Newsom and his crew have repeatedly clapped back at Trump, with the governor posting scathing messages to his official social media pages, bashing Trump and his MAGA allies.

“Clearly, for the Democratic base, standing up to Trump is ‘a winning issue’ or ‘a winning position,'” John Ellis, a longtime political analyst and contributor on a number of major networks and the founder of a publication called News Items and its sister publication, Political News Items, told the Irish Star.

A long street to the Democratic presidential nomination

But whether or not or not Newsom’s ways will finally propel him toward the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 stays to be seen, Ellis said.

“I’m not sure that catapults Newsom to the forefront,” he said of Newsom standing up to Trump and his MAGA supporter base. “It may have some impact, depending on how it plays out. It may help. It may not make any difference. Or it may hurt his chances of winning the Democratic nomination.”

What it boils down to, Ellis said, is that Newsom cannot afford to seem to have “lost” to Trump, lest his political career could be over on the spot — or moderately, once his time period is up in January 2027. Newsom is term-limited and lacks the power to run for a third time period under California law, which means he’ll get replaced by whoever wins the state’s 2026 gubernatorial election.

If Newsom needs the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, he’ll have to “finish out his term in style,” Ellis said. “He needs to have a good finish to his eight years of service,” he said.

After that, the governor will need to put together a political “machine” comprised of advisers and aides who will help him garner assist and earn the nomination at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) that 12 months.

“Gavin Newsom, it seems to me, is running for president, right? And so, the big parts of that are being able to raise enough money, attracting talent, attracting the policy people that can help you think through what your platform is going to be,” Eliis explained.

“It’s a gigantic undertaking, and he will obviously get a lot of publicity with this,” the skilled said of Newsom’s spat with Trump.

Dr. Robert Speel cautioned, however, that there can be “plenty of other incidents and issues prior to the first primaries in 2028” that Newsom may have to work his manner through that could hamper his probabilities of incomes the nomination.

“I don’t know how important the current standoff will be,” this system chair and affiliate professor of political science at Penn State Behrend — who also heads the varsity’s Public Policy Initiative — told the Irish Star.

“Yes, Newsom may gain some favor among Democrats for speaking out against Trump in California, but there will be plenty of other incidents and issues prior to the first primaries in 2028,” he emphasised.

Trump dangers dropping key Republican seats in Congress with retaliation

If Trump escalates his retaliations against Newsom and the state of California, he could risk dropping some key Republican seats in the state, which could value him the GOP House majority he so desperately wants, Speel said.

“Trump could attempt to retaliate against California for objecting to his recent military actions, but some of those efforts will get blocked in court, and others will lead to greater protests in California and elsewhere,” he said. “While California is a mostly Democratic state, it also elects nine Republicans to Congress, seats that the tiny Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives needs to defend.”

Speel famous that “Trump is overwhelmingly unpopular with Californians” and said that, if he is “perceived as overreacting and using military force when unnecessary to quell domestic violence, there will be a strong public reaction against that, including among some of his previous supporters.”

“Even a few Republican members of Congress may grow spines and vote against something Trump wants,” he said.
