President  Donald Trump said Zohran Mamdani, the democratic nominee for New York City mayor, “will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party.”

The U.S President made the comment on his TruthSocial account a day after present-mayor Eric Adams announced he’s ending his reelection bid. He called Mamdani the “self-proclaimed New York City Communist” and added that, if elected, the 33-year-old politician who gained the first elections in June, is “going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City.”

“Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed!”, Trump wrote.

Trump has beforehand raised the chance of arresting Mamdani and stripping him of his citizenship. In July, the President said his administration will “have to arrest him” when requested about Mamdani’s pledge to “stop masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement brokers “from deporting our neighbors.”

Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, is the favorite to win the November elections as Adams quit his re-election bid after “constant media speculation” about his future and the city campaign finance board’s decision to deny him public matching funds throttled his campaign.

After Adams’ withdrawal, the race is down to Democrat Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running independently after losing to Mamdani during the primary, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Adams, elected in 2022 as a Democrat, was running as an independent after his indictment last year for alleged bribery and fraud.

Trump had repeatedly encouraged Adams to withdraw from the race in hopes of boosting Cuomo’s chances.

Mamdani has been campaigning on the promise that he would make the largest city in the country an affordable one.

He has proposed plans that include a free bus programme and freezing rent increases on rent-stabilised apartments, paid for by for by a heightened income tax for millionaires and an increase in the corporate tax rate.

Mamdani blamed the Trump administration for Adam’s dropping out, accusing the president of meddling in the election.

“Donald Trump and his billionaire donors can determine the actions of Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo, but they can’t dictate the results of this election,” he said in an interview with NY1.
