President Donald Trump has demanded that Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, pay for some “damages” after smoke from the wildfires crossed the U.S. border and “poisoned” the air.
Speaking with reporters on Sunday, the president announced that he had spoken to Carney about the wildfires in Ontario, which have precipitated a number of U.S. cities to expertise hazy and smoky circumstances. According to the president, the dialog “went well.”
“But I told him, ‘You’ve got to stop these fires from coming in and poisoning our air.’ Our air is being poisoned,” Trump said. “I’ve a good relationship with Mark Carney, but you realize, we obtained to stop the fires up there.”

Several of the president’s Republican allies have also backed his decision to impose tariffs on Canada. Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno took to X to vocalize his support.
“Americans is not going to pay the price for the negligence of Canadian leaders,” he said. “Four years in a row of report fires that have produced many years of environmental injury. Further proof that you don’t have to be very sensible to get elected as a liberal, you just have to be woke.”
However, Trump’s ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, sang a different tune about the fires, praising cooperation between the U.S. and Canada. “I commend the excellent cooperation between the United States and Canada as we confront these fires together,” he wrote.
“Our two governments are monitoring and sharing data in real time – coordination that displays our partnership at its best,” he added. Carney called on the U.S. to better deal with climate change during a press convention.
“We need a contribution from the Americans in the battle against climate change,” Carney told reporters. “Climate change is everybody’s duty, including the U.S.”
