Trump ends Canada trade talks after using voice of | Political News

President Donald Trump has reportedly halted all negotiations with Canada after they allegedly used an commercial using the voice of former President Ronald Reagan to oppose U.S. tariffs.

Earlier in the week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford predicted that the U.S. president, who has repeatedly expressed his admiration for the previous president, wouldn’t take kindly to the commercial. And they weren’t far off the mark.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs,” President Trump said of the 60-second commercial. “They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts.”

“TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” President Trump added. The foundation also released its own statement in response to the ad.

“The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute learned that the Government of Ontario, Canada, created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan delivering his “Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade,” dated April 25, 1987,” read the statement. “The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.”

“The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter,” the statement concluded. “We encourage you to watch President Reagan’s unedited video on our YouTube channel.”

The post also included a link to the former president’s address. A spokesperson for Ford issued their own statement in response to the president. “The commercial uses an unedited excerpt from one of President Reagan’s public addresses, which is available through public domain,” the spokesperson said in an e-mail to CBC News.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also issued his own assertion in response to the deal with President Trump going awry. “The quote of former President Ronald Reagan was recognizing that ultimately somebody pays the tariff — and it’s the consumer,” Carney’s office said to Toronto’s RED-FM.

“The company passes it on, the price goes up eventually, and you pay the cost of the tariff,” it added. “As an economist, I say that if somebody is trading fairly, it’s better not to have tariffs between those countries.”

Carney’s assertion provides, “I don’t agree with their coverage, but I acknowledge that is their coverage, and I don’t count on it to change.” A source acquainted to the state of affairs told Politico that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc can be assembly this week, though it’s unclear if the 2 did meet.
