U.S. President Donald Trump praised Hungary’s far-right chief Viktor Orban after welcoming him to the White House Friday.
Trump repeatedly said during a press convention alongside Orban that Europe is failing to tackle its immigration disaster, which he said he believes Orban has skillfully prevented by imposing harsh immigration insurance policies.
“He’s a great leader and he’s respected all over. Not necessarily liked by some of the leaders, but those leaders are proven to be wrong,” Trump said of Orban Friday. “If you look at Europe, they’ve made tremendous mistakes on immigration. It’s really hurting them very badly. He has not made a mistake on immigration. Hungary is being led properly.”
Trump went on to recommend that Orban’s handling of immigration will make him “very successful” in Hungary’s upcoming election in 2026.
Political analysts have in contrast Trump and Orban’s management types, characterizing the right-wing figures as authoritarian and anti-immigrant.
Orban has maintained a “no migration” policy stance since the nation entered a so-called migration disaster in 2015, when it took in more than 390,000 migrants and asylum seekers, according to the Migration Policy Institute.
