President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he’ll award a lifeguard with a “high civilian honor” after the 16-year-old saved a little boy from drowning.
The teenager dove into the water, combating off the highly effective tide to attain the kid, who was almost swept away. The lifeguard dragged the kid back to shore at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California.
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. His assertion follows his son, Eric, suggesting that the lifeguard obtain a reward.
“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor,” Eric Trump wrote on X. “This is truly the best of America. Well done!”
Scott Vander Dussen captured the dramatic video, telling NBC that the boy, who is about 10 years previous, was swept out to sea by a large wave.
“It caught a lot of people off-guard,” said Vander Dussen. “Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time.”
He added that he was glad that it ended the best way it did. “I’m certain if the lifeguards weren’t there, he wouldn’t have gone home that night.”
Other beachgoers and a second lifeguard rushed to help carry the boy back to security.
The boy was evaluated by paramedics and reunited with his household, according to NBC. Santa Cruz lifeguards are extremely skilled and must full at least 56 hours of lifeguard instruction, 24 hours of medical certification training, and more than 80 hours of marine security lifeguard training.
