Trump open to Congress creating national holiday | Political News

Karoline Leavitt said Donald Trump could be open to creating a national holiday in honor of his close ally, Charlie Kirk.

Monday marked the first White House Press Briefing since Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. The day before, both the President and Vice President attended Kirk’s memorial service at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

A reporter requested Leavitt if Trump would really like to see Congress go a national holiday that honors Kirk each yr.

“That’s an interesting question,” said Leavitt. “I’m sure he wouldn’t oppose such a thing, but you can pose that to him yourself the next time you get the chance.”

Leavitt added that apart from Trump’s plans to honor Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, there was nothing else on the horizon to honor Kirk.

Kirk was fatally shot while talking about gun violence at a public debate. His alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, was hit with a slew of expenses, including aggravated homicide and witness tampering.

The interplay was rapidly shared on social media, with many criticising the query. “He’d join Columbus and MLK as the two civilian-honored holidays,” wrote one individual on X. “It’s tough to justify him rising to that level of honor.”

Another wrote: “What?? You’ve got to be kidding me!” While another wrote, “He literally said we have too many holidays just a month ago,” referring to a Truth Social Post Trump made about “non-working holidays.”

Leavitt’s feedback come just a day after President Trump was the headline speaker at Kirk’s memorial, extending his condolences to Kirk’s widow, Erika, and describing his pal as “our greatest evangelist for American liberty,” before calling him a “martyr now for American freedom.”

However, not like Trump, who said he hates his opponents and would not “want the best for them,” Erika Kirk shared that she had forgiven the alleged gunman accused of killing her husband.

“My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life,” she said, including, “I forgive him because it is what Christ did. The answer to hate is not hate.”

Several others spoke at the memorial, including members of Turning Point USA and Trump administration officers, who said they had been impressed by Kirk’s work.

“The day that Charlie died, angels wept, but those tears have been turned into fire in our hearts,” said White House deputy chief of employees Stephen Miller. “Our enemies cannot comprehend our strength.”

Elon Musk, who had a public falling out with Trump earlier this yr, sat next to the president, and the 2 had been seen chatting. He later posted a photograph of them with the caption: “For Charlie.”
