President Trump announced Friday that he’s designating Nigeria as a “nation of specific concern” because of the continuing slaughter of Christians and the federal government’s unwillingness to take motion to stop it. Using Truth Social for the announcement, President Trump condemned the atrocities.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!”

Nigeria is home to the biggest Muslim population of any nation in Africa, comprising about 56 % of the population, or about 120 million adherents; 44 % is Christian. Though formally secular, in those areas dominated by Muslims, Christians are subject to persecution. This contains the imposition of Sharia law and the use of non secular police to implement it. In the far northeast of the nation, the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram operates just about at will.
The atheists and Islamists on social media have created a cottage industry out of denying that Christians are focused at all, but the best data signifies that in 2025 alone, there have been over 7,000 murders and 7,800 kidnappings. The kidnappings are largely of kids who are then offered into slavery.

The impact of designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern under the provisions of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998 is essentially symbolic. Responses are restricted to diplomatic slapfighting, like cancelling cultural exchanges where we ship them our non-binary activists and they ship us their electronic mail scammers; see Section 405(a) of the law. There are also potential commerce, security, and financial penalties. Total commerce between the U.S. and Nigeria is $13 billion, about half of that with the Philippines, so it is not like those sanctions will likely be seen.
The line in President Trump’s message that caught my eye was “We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!” I do not know what “ready” and “willing” seem like. Boko Haram is a downside, but the real downside is a fragile state that cannot use pressure to shield Christian communities because the bulk of the population is, at best, apathetic to the plight of Christians, if not outright sympathetic to the trigger of the killers. Using property like Predator or direct motion by Special Operations Forces would do more to recruit for the jihadis and destabilize the federal government than it could to shield Christians.
