Ukrainian drones and missiles struck a major Russian ammunition plant behind the entrance line on Monday, sparking a large fire.
Ukraine’s General Staff said long-range drones struck the Sverdlov ammunition plant in the Nizhny Novgorod area of western Russia in a single day.
The plant is one of Russia’s largest explosives producers. It provides the Russian military with aviation and artillery ordnance, bombs, and anti-aircraft and anti-tank munitions, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The General Staff said Ukraine also hit a key oil terminal in Crimea, beginning a fire, as effectively as an important weapons depot.
Russia said its air defenses shot down 251 Ukrainian drones. It confirmed a big Ukrainian drone assault over 14 Russian areas.
The assault comes a day after Russia launched drones, missiles and guided aerial bombs across Ukraine, killing 5 people in a major nighttime assault.
Ukraine’s air power said Russian forces fired more than 50 ballistic and cruise missiles and 496 drones.
It marked the largest aerial assault in Lviv since Russia’s invasion started in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 9 areas have been focused.
“We need more protection, a rapid implementation of all defense agreements, especially on air defense, to make this aerial terror pointless,” he said in a Telegram post.
In latest months, Ukraine has carried out its own long-range strikes on Russia, many of which have focused Moscow’s oil infrastructure and triggered fuel shortages.
