Ryder Cup vice-captain Edoardo Molinari has secured a spot in the U.S. Open via Final Qualifying and will play at Oakmont Country Club next month.

The 44-year-old golfer, who hasn’t received since 2017, clinched one of the eight spots accessible at Monday’s occasion in Surrey at Walton Health. This occasion noticed hopefuls for the U.S. Open compete in a 36-hole contest for a place at the third main of the 12 months.

Come June, all eyes shall be on world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who not too long ago received the PGA Championship, claiming his third main profession win before his caddie uncovered his true emotions on fame and money, and Rory McIlroy, whose Masters success was adopted by a disappointing week at Quail Hollow that noticed him seemingly referred to as out by Amanda Balionis.

Joining Molinari at Oakmont shall be Jordan Smith, Joakim Lagergren, Guido Migliozzi, Frederic Lacroix, Sam Bairstow, Jacques Kruyswijk, and Andrea Pavan.

While Molinari, 44, has yet to obtain main success in his prolonged profession, he did have a “weird” experience at the 2006 Masters, where he performed alongside Tiger Woods.

After successful the U.S. Amateur at Merion in 2005, Molinari certified for the Masters the next 12 months, which meant he would play the first spherical at Augusta with Woods, the then-defending champion.

But the experience, while “incredible,” left Molinari feeling “very weird,” particularly after Woods, who was at the peak of his sport, launched himself to the Italian on the first tee at Augusta.

“It was an incredible week,” Molinari instructed Fried Egg Golf. “The thing is, I didn’t know this until I won the U.S. Amateur, when you win the US Amateur, you play the following year at The Masters with the defending champion. And Tiger happened to win in 2005, so basically I was waiting for this tee time with Tiger at The Masters for six, seven months.

“I just keep in mind taking a lot of notes from the week. A pal of mine mentioned you write them down, and it was a great thought because I still have this small diary with some ideas and the whole lot that occurred, that virtually 20 years down the road, you are beginning to neglect.

“The feeling was very weird, to be honest. I remember not even being nervous on the first tee, it was like something between a dream, a movie set, it was just very, very weird.

“Francesco [Molinari, his brother] was caddying, and I keep in mind anytime Tiger went into a inexperienced aspect bunker, he was the first one to be proper next to him making an attempt to clean his ball.

Molinari added: “It was just an experience for both of us, which made me realise that a, even if I won the U.S. Amateur, I was still far, far away from being able to compete in a major championship, but also you see other people play, you see those kind of courses that as an amateur, you don’t even dream about playing the Masters. It was an unbelievable experience.”
