Waiting for the Out viewers left divided minutes into | UK News
Waiting for the Out viewers have been left divided just minutes into the new BBC prison drama on Saturday (January 3). The new six-part sequence has been crafted by acclaimed screenwriter Dennis Kelly, drawing from Andy West’s memoir, The Life Inside.
The programme centres on Dan Stewer (portrayed by Josh Finan), who chooses to educate a group of male prisoners about dominance, freedom, fortune and other topics that have perplexed philosophers for millennia. These themes take on contemporary significance when seen through the lens of the inmates’ experiences, both sparking enthusiasm and producing battle.
The official synopsis elaborates: “Through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past – growing up with a father (Gerard Kearns) who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee (Stephen Wight) and uncle Frank (Phil Daniels). Dan took a different path, but this time working in a prison begins to make him worry, obsessively, that he belongs behind bars just like his father.
“As Dan’s personal disaster deepens, his actions start to threaten both his own future, and his household’s,” reports the Mirror.
The programme’s cast also features Samantha Spiro, Phil Daniels, Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo, Neal Barry, Alex Ferns, Francis Lovehall, Steven Meo, Ric Renton, Tom Moutchi, Nima Taleghani, Sule Rimi, Charlie Rix and Jude Mack.
The opening episode witnessed Dan embark on his first day delivering philosophy lessons within a male correctional facility. The session quickly descended into chaos as he discovered he’d miscalculated his pupils – and the burden of his own history.
Becoming obsessed with minor particulars, Dan spiralled out of control in his classroom, jeopardised his prospects of fatherhood and shattered a crucial vow made to his new partner. However, when a recognisable figure emerged from the past, Dan found himself compelled to face someone he believed he’d permanently escaped.
BBC audiences were swift to voice their grievances following the broadcast, with numerous viewers expressing their dissatisfaction on X (previously known as Twitter). “Well this is 45 minutes of my life I will not get back,” one viewer penned.
A second contributor remarked: “This is so bizarre,” whilst a third declared: “God this is terrible. Fella has no survival intuition. I’d be out of there. Don’t assume they’d lock him in there alone with no means out.”
Conversely, other audience members were captivated by the episode’s content, with one individual posting: “Wow very fascinating model! Quite different from anything I’ve seen,” whilst another proclaimed: “Just watched #WaitingForTheOut and I feel it is going to be good.”
Andy West, executive producer and creator of The Life Inside, had previously stated: “I’m so grateful to the writers, administrators, producers and everybody concerned in adapting The Life Inside. They have introduced extraordinary artistic and ethical creativeness to the tales in the guide. We all hope to make a sequence that goes past the clichés about prisons and the households inside them and that touches people either facet of the wall.”
Writer and executive producer Dennis Kelly chimed in: “It’s not at all uncommon for the males in Andy West’s household to end up in prison – but Andy is the only one that selected to be there. His guide is humorous, insightful, lovely, genuinely heartbreaking and nothing like what you’d anticipate it to be – we have tried to take that into the sequence. God alone is aware of if we have succeeded, but we have tried..”
