MORNING MUSING
The Schumer Shutdown’s lasted long enough (six weeks and counting) that it is reasonably sucked all of the oxygen out of other Republican agenda objects. (Perhaps that was the entire thought.) But now that it is in its last gasps, the query turns into: What now?
I feel it is honest to say Republicans gained the battle right here — they voted over and over to keep the federal government funded and to reopen it, and they stood firm (and introduced a united entrance, for once). But Republicans are notoriously unhealthy at being those in charge — and they’re only assured that for another 12 months or so. If Republicans need to retain control of Congress (and God help us all if they do not), they have to work out the next proper fast:
- Appropriations for the rest of the federal government features that will only be funded through January 30, so that we do not run up against the end of January and wind up proper back where we had been at the end of September. (And do not assume for one second the Democrats aren’t considering how to engineer that.)
- Affordability, affordability, affordability — that’s clearly the new key phrase, and Republicans need to go full-throated at pushing insurance policies that will help continue to carry down costs and foster financial growth.
- Healthcare. Obviously, the Dems are going to be hammering this — and for good purpose (because it helps them politically). Republicans have had 15 years-plus to come up with an various/repair for Obamacare. They’re going to need to roll out some options that are workable for the American people — and soon.
In a nutshell, it is time for the GOP to: Pivot!
